What is this request about?
With the cobalt request, companies want to determine whether their products contain cobalt and where they are sourced from. Since most companies can’t determine this themselves, they survey their supply chain to gather this information so they are able to report.
It’s important to know what we need a CRT from you regardless of whether your parts/products contain cobalt or not. It also doesn’t matter where the cobalt is from, if you have cobalt in your parts/products, you need to declare it.
How do I start?
You can start by sending a blank CRT to all of your relevant suppliers with the request to fill it out. Typically, the CRT is passed up the supply chain to the point where the cobalt source of origin can be identified.
Once your suppliers send the completed questionnaire’s back to you, you will have all the necessary information required to complete your own CRT. You don’t have to wait for all suppliers to get back to you before you create your own CRT, you can identify the percentage of feedback you received with question 4.
Why is my customer asking me for this information?
Cobalt is changing the Responsible Minerals landscape: it's the first widely-adopted voluntary Responsible Mineral. Even though there are no legal reporting obligations for cobalt, there are different reasons as to why your customer is requesting this information from you, most commonly, these types of requests are driven by customer and market expectations.
