Question: My company manufactures goods for export to multiple countries. We know a product can't have multiple Harmonized System (HS) codes based on industry or application. But can a product have multiple HS codes depending on the country it is being shipped to?
Answer: It should not be necessary to use a classification that includes the full statistical subheading for each destination country. Instead, it's generally recommended to include the first six digits, per the WCO international standard, in your commercial invoices or certificates of origin. These will be internationally recognized when received by customs authorities.
This approach is recommended whether you are exporting goods yourself or are working with a logistics company to export to an overseas buyer.
