Companies are not required to use the Conflict Mineral Reporting Template (CMRT) to make responsible minerals declarations; other forms of documentation are allowable. For instance, affirmation statements can be used in lieu of CMRT documentation to demonstrate compliance.
However, any documentation used by suppliers to make a declaration must meet industry expectations in order to be acceptable. Unfamiliar documentation may be more difficult to interpret and ingest into IT systems based on consistent data structures. Anyone receiving declarations in an unfamiliar format should be sure to read responses carefully and take time to understand the information received.
