One of the ways the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) seeks to prevent or reduce environmental pollution is by restricting the use in or import to the U.S. of certain substances or substance families. Under Section 6 of the Toxic Substances Control Act (TSCA), the EPA had restricted nine substances or substance families as of midyear 2020. These included PCBs, dioxins, chlorofluoroalkanes, asbestos, lead, mercury, formaldehyde, certain nitrites, and certain uses of hexavalent chromium compounds.
In early 2021, the EPA published a list of five more restricted substances. For more information, see TSCA restricted substances: Changes in January 2021.
