RG - Glossary (Assent Materials Declaration Tool)

Article: Describes whether the Product or Sub-Product stands alone as a shippable entity; this term is specific to REACH and describes the lowest level at which a Substance exceedance is expressed

Authorized Representative: An official person of authority regarding the data present in the declaration (can be the same as the company contact)

BoM: The Bill oMaterials is a comprehensive list of materials or components of a Product that can include a shopping list and instructions on how to assemble the product.

CAS Number: The Chemical Abstract Service number, unique to one Substance. A CAS Registry Number includes up to 10 digits which are separated into 3 groups by hyphens. The first part of the number, starting from the left, has 2 to 7 digits; the second part has 2 digits. The final part consists of a single check digit. It is possible to have no CAS number, which means the substance is not found in any of the Chemical Abstract Service databases

Class A Declaration: Provides an answer to a query statement. Each query is a statement with a response of true or false. A Class A declaration may contain more than one query list

Class C Declaration: Reports a summary of types of Substances within a Product based on existing Substance category lists or a custom list defined by the requestor or the supplier. For each Substance above the defined threshold, users indicate the mass and mass percent of the Substance in the Product

Class D Declaration: Reports Substances at the Homogeneous Material level (Full Material Disclosure). The Product is broken into Sub-Products until the Homogeneous Material level is reached, then the Substances are listed for the specific Homogeneous Material including Substance name, Substance mass or Substance mass percent

Company Contact: An official contact that acts as the point of communication within the company. This person can be contacted with questions about the request for declaration

Company Unique ID: An assigned value for referring to the company that is not the company’s name (for example, a DUNS number)

company Unique ID Authority: The regulating body that assigned the Unique ID (for example, Dun & Bradstreet)

Concentration: Concentration is calculated by weight over weight (w/w) and expressed in %

Effective Date: The date upon which the information provided in the declaration becomes effective

Exemptions: Substances that qualify under a Restricted or Declarable Substance List that are allowed to be included in a Product under a specific set of conditions

Full Material Disclosure: An FMD divulges every Substance in the Product down to the homogeneous level, including location, mass, and/or PPM  

Homogeneous Material: A Homogeneous Material is one material, of uniform composition throughout or a material consisting of a combination of materials, that cannot be disjointed or separated into different materials by mechanical actions such as unscrewing, cutting, crushing, grinding, and abrasive processes

Instances: The number of occurrences of the Sub-Product within the parent Product or Sub-Product

Instance Identity: Additional Product or Sub-Product information (such as a SKU number, a lot code, a date code, etc.) associated with one particular Product number only

Instance Identity Authority: The entity that issued the Instance ID

IPC-1752A: The materials declaration standard for companies in the supply chain to share information on materials in products. The standard is supported by an XML schema and a data model. 

Level: The level is based on the regulation as well as any additions the supplier or requester has made

Manufacturing Site: Where the Product or Sub-Product was made. The Manufacturing Site may also be where the Product or Sub-Product was assembled

Mass: The amount/weight of a Substance, Homogeneous Material, etc., in the given Product or Sub-Product

Proprietary Data: Also known as a trade secret, Proprietary Data is information a company wishes to keep confidential

Reportable Application: The intended use of a Product for which a material/Substance content declaration is required

Response Date: The date of the supplier’s response to the request for information

Sub-Product: A Sub-Product comprises any parts or sub-assemblies within the declared Product that can nest within each other infinitely

Substance Category: A high-level grouping of Substances

Threshold: The maximum acceptable level of a Substance found within a Product. Calculated by percentage of the Product’s weight (%) or by PPM

Uncertainty Statement: A statement acknowledging the potential deviation within the declaration from the standard expectation

Version: Are there other versions of the Product or Sub-Product under different names?

Weightless Parts: The term used to define parts that have a value that can change depending on the size of the part. Parts can have:

  • A fixed chemical composition, but variable weight, and/or
  • A variable chemical composition, but a fixed weight, and/or
  • A variable chemical composition and variable weight

For example, resins, adhesives, cables, or wires.
